Our Cups Runneth … to Therapy!
Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which small cups made from glass, bamboo, earthenware, or silicone, are placed on the skin to create suction. The suction of the cups on the surface of the skin mobilizes blood flow to promote the healing of a broad range of medical ailments.
There are several types of cupping therapy, including dry cupping, wet cupping, and fire cupping. At Element, we practice mostly a dry cupping method that uses medical-grade silicone cups or a manual pump to generate the vacuum inside the cup. A cup is placed upside down on the patient’s skin, causing it to be gently pulled upward and the blood vessels to expand. The vacuum helps dispel any stagnation in the blood and lymph in the area, and it is also used to improve flow of Qi, easing respiratory diseases and chronic muscular pain. The cup is generally left in place for 5 – 10 minutes and can also be moved to other areas needing relief during the treatment. The silicone cups are pliable enough to be shifted from place to place on the skin to produce a massage-like effect.
The British Cupping Society says cupping therapy can treat a variety of conditions. Here is a list is the most common conditions, but there are many others as well:
Blood disorders, such as anemia and hemophilia
Rheumatic diseases, such as arthritis and fibromyalgia
Fertility and gynecological disorders
Skin problems, such as eczema and acne
High blood pressure (hypertension)

Bronchial congestion caused by allergies and asthma
