Little Girl Is Blowing Her NoseFeel a cold coming on? Here’s a few home remedies to rev up your immune system to keep you healthy during the fluctuations of spring weather and a fresh onslaught of germs.

1. Cold Wet Sock Remedy

Sounds terrible, right? Soak your feet in hot water for 5 minutes. Soak a pair of cotton socks in ice cold water. Wring the socks out well so they are not dripping, then put them on your warm feet. Next, cover the cold, wet cotton socks with a pair of thick wool socks, then go directly to bed. The socks will be dried in the morning and hopefully you just saved yourself from catching a cold.

How does this work?

The alternating heat and cold creates a pumping action that stimulates the circulation of blood and lymphatic flow in the body, optimizing both organ function and lymphatic drainage. This home remedy helps boost your immune system by helping to flush out harmful pathogens that can cause cold or flu symptoms.

2. Respiratory Steam

Using a combination of dried eucalyptus and peppermint leaves, place a handful of the herbs in a pot of boiling water. Lower the temperature to simmer. Breathe in vapors.

Eucalyptus is considered to have antibacterial and antiviral properties. This herb can also assist in clearing mucous from the lungs.
Peppermint contains antiseptic and decongestant properties. Together, these herbs make a perfect respiratory steam to help fend off cold or flu symptoms.

3. Vapor Rub to the Feet

I apply an all natural vapor rub (petroleum free) to the bottom of my feet at night and cover with it with socks. This home remedy is also easily used on children.

How does this work?

Most natural vapor rubs contain peppermint and eucalyptus oils, which act as a cooling agent when applied topically. When applied to the feet, these oils stimulate the nerve endings, creating a circulatory response as well as an immune response of the lymphatic system.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar

Mix two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar (the best is Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar) with a cup of room temperature water and drink it three times a day.

How does this work?

Apple cider vinegar is very alkalizing, which helps balance the body’s pH to fight inflammation and infections, as well as colds and the flu.
