The day after Christmas is usually associated with gift returns (chef’s hat that lights up and sings Margaritaville, anyone?) and huge markdowns, the post-holiday corollary to Black Friday. But in the British Isles and former English colonies, it was once celebrated as the time to give to the people who provide a service all year long. It was the day to honor those who make it possible for us to live our busy lives, who do all the things we take for granted.
In our diverse culture, we embrace the holidays of many different traditions. In this case, Boxing Day is a welcome reminder to acknowledge the interconnected web of people who support each other in this often frantic, busy city.
