Acupuncture points are located throughout the body with very precise locations. Selecting which point to use varies from person to person, based on the condition being treated and the underlying imbalance or disharmony creating the condition. An imbalance can be caused by trauma that can directly affect tissue, muscles, bones, and circulation or emotions held in different areas of our bodies, such as anger in the liver that, in turn, can affect the muscles, and sadness the spleen that can interrupt digestion, for example. Other causes are environmental, like pollution and toxins that directly affect our body’s immune systems and organ function; or dietary and lifestyle that influence how the body functions and our immune response; or genetic causes, making us prone to certain diseases and conditions.
Acupuncturists see patients for a myriad of conditions: emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual. One point that can cover a multitude of conditions is Du 20, also known as Bai Hui. Translating as Hundred Meetings, this refers to convergence of many energy systems that can ultimately treat literally hundreds of conditions at Du 20.
This point is located at the very top of the head, the highest point on the body. It can be shocking at first when an acupuncturist palpates this spot. Even in the midst of the moment of surprise, patients like it, finding it very calming. Treating overall circulation and balance, this point specifically benefits the head, brain, and the organs of the five senses (eyes, ears, tongues, skin, and nose) and also soothes the mind and the spirit. Known as a “lifting point,” it’s useful in treating various prolapse conditions and is an excellent point to employ during pregnancy to keep the fetus in place – helping to maintain a healthy pregnancy. It’s also good for cosmetic purposes, to help “lift” sagging skin when used with other acupuncture points. It can be used for headaches, dizziness, ear ringing, both hypertension and hypotension, agitation, poor memory, sadness, nasal congestion and discharge, and inability to taste food or drink, just to name a few.
The Du 20 is an all-star in the roster of acupuncture points!
