We all seek a profession that we love. Finding our passion is not always easy. Most of us long to feel that work has purpose, is challenging, and benefits our communities in some way. I believe that a successful business requires a solid foundation based on one’s own principles.
As an acupuncturist, I have a number of principles upon which I have built my practice.
1. Honoring my profession, having respect for my profession, its traditions and philosophies.
2. Honoring my patients. It’s their time with me, so I give them my full and complete attention. I practice with deliberate attentiveness and care.
3. Privacy. HIPPA regulations clearly define privacy policies pertaining to health information. Patients open their lives, share details and experiences that respect and support their offering security and trust.
4. Dress code. While I donโt wear a white lab coat, I do believe in professional attire as it indicates respect for my patients and colleagues. Since I do a tremendous amount of hands-on work, comfortable is key to my ability to do my job well.
5. Structure and boundaries. Having structure is important in a small, independent business. Precise and clear boundaries for patients and staff, including policies for lateness, cancelations, and cell phone use, are crucial. Communicating these expectations helps to insure balance in the workplace.
6. Having a clean and comfortable workspace. This allows for the free flow of energy and healing without restrictions and clutter. It allows me to keep my mind focused on my patients.
7. Respecting my days off. While this is no easy task, I have realized that my two kids and wonderful husband also need and deserve my time and attention. Taking time to recharge provides the perspective that helps me do my job better.
8. Pay it forward. While I may not have the finances to contribute to every requested fundraiser or event, I do try to give my time and expertise when I can. Time is a thoughtful and valuable contribution, capable of making a bit difference.
9. Learn from others. Continuing education classes are very important, keeping our brains engaged and exposed to new ideas. Learning from colleagues can be invaluable. Knowledge will only strengthen us as practitioners, increasing our insights as well as our techniques and abilities.
10. Being grateful. I am grateful for all the experiences that have brought me to where I am today. I am grateful for the support and dedication of patients, friends, and family. I am grateful to be able to practice what I love.
