Time to beat the heat with some hydration. Of course, hydration comes in many forms, with water being the very best, but not necessarily the most fun. My kids, aged six and four, have eagerly wanted to try a lemonade stand. As they are both are a bit shy, I was excited for them to have the opportunity to put themselves out there!

Recently, we’ve had the opportunity to have not one but two lemonade stands! We did one at a friend’s house in upstate NY and another right in front of Element Natural Healing Arts in Brooklyn. What fun they had! There were many creative steps, from making signs and preparing the lemonade stand’s appearance, to making the delicious beverage and formulating marketing tactics. They worked together as a team on each sale: filling cups with ice, pouring just the right amount of lemonade, engaging with their customers, and collecting the money.

At first, they were a little reserved and quiet as they talked to people passing by, but then they gained confidence in speaking to new people and it got easier and easier. Manners are always important, so they made sure to say “thank you,” make eye contact, and add “have a good day” even when there were no lemonade takers. They certainly experienced rejection alongside a tremendous amount of smiles and appreciation. Courage, confidence, kindness, service, marketing, public relations, and counting money — all critically important aspects of life!
Who would have thought a simple lemonade stand could offer so both invaluable learning opportunities and classic fun!
