100g-font-b-pang-b-font-font-b-da-b-font-font-b-hai-b-fontPang da hai, also known as the mature seed of the Malva nut, is a traditional herb used in Chinese medicine for sore and scratchy throat issues common this time of year, including tonsillitis, hoarseness, acute pharyngitis, loss of voice, phlegm, and coughs. It can also be used for constipation, headaches, and rashes. The translation of pang da hai is “big fat sea,” inspired by the actual expansion of the herb once the rind is cracked. The insides plump up about 6 to 8 times the seed’s original size, once it is soaked in water. It’s pretty amazing to see the transformation.

A typical dosage is 3-5 pieces, soaked in hot water for 15-30 minutes for maximum efficacy. The taste is pretty bland and a little herby but quite tolerable. For the best preparation, do not boil it with the water, but, instead, add it to already boiled water. It can also help a sore throat when added to licorice tea. A touch of honey can be used if desired.
