By now, we all realize that this Sunday is Mother’s Day. Many versions of this holiday abound all over the world, in a variety of cultures. In the United States, the second Sunday of May was designated the national Mother’s Day in 1914. There are as many iterations of mothering as there are cultures that honor mothers, so this Sunday, let’s expand the celebration to include ALL the women who have helped us become the people we are.
These women are everywhere. They might be your favorite teachers or scout leaders or guidance counselors. They could be aunts, grandmothers, sisters, or cousins, or roommates, friends, bosses, babysitters, mentors, colleagues, and neighbors. The list is long. So many different women nurture, love, support — indeed “mother”– us throughout our lives.
Let’s honor and celebrate those women, too, with calls, texts, emails or even flowers, this Sunday and beyond!
