Believe it or not, the temperatures will start dropping as the seasons finally shift to fall and winter, which means that cold and flu germs will spread easily in classrooms, subways, stores, and offices. There are many ways to boost your immune system and ward off pathogens, but the best solution of all may be the simplest: WASH YOUR HANDS.

Just to emphasize the importance of handwashing, the Centers for Disease Control have dubbed October 15 National Handwashing Day! It’s something we all take for granted, but the practice of handwashing saves countless lives in hospitals, nursing homes and rehab centers, just as it thwarts the spread of germs in our daily lives.

As a refresher, there are five simple and effective steps:

Wet, Lather, Scrub, Rinse, Dry.

Make it a habit: as soon as you walk in the door; the second your kids come home from school; after you get off the subway; before meals; after you pet your dog — the more you wash, the more you protect yourself and those around you.

Lather up!
